Meet the Inspectors

Steve Surette
Father of three girls, Catie 13, Molly 11 & Anna 4. Married
to Cathy for the past 18 years. We live in a 34 yr. old home
in Carmel, IN.
I have spent nearly all of my career self – employed. In
1991, I was offered to take over and run my Dad’s home inspection
business. In 1976 my father began Dave Surette and Associates,
Inc. when I was 14 years old. My younger brothers Scott and
Randy also operate inspection companies in the Indianapolis market
place.
I recently served two one year terms as the President of the Indiana
Chapter of the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI). In
that position we formed professional relationships with MIBOR,
IAR, BAGI and most recently we finished a five year effort with
our State legislatures to enact a law requiring licensing for professional
home inspectors. This began July 2005. Gibbs Surette Inspect
employs full time home inspectors, each inspecting 300 - 500 homes
per year. During the past 8 years we have inspected over 3000 multi-family
HUD apartment properties for REAC. We also received a contract
Feb. 2003, to inspect 1800 single family home in the Detroit MI
city proper during a thirty day period for an investor group that
purchased the properties site unseen, then had us confirm the condition
of those homes. The Detroit report was complied and posted
on the Internet using Excel & Access software with digital
photos. I am nationally certified to teach the 203(k) FHA
single family rehab consulting program and currently work as an
Adjunct Faculty instructor at the Indianapolis campus of Ivy Tech
community college teaching a 60 hrs pre-licensing course since
2004. US Housing Consultants recently hired me to perform
and train inspectors to provide Capital Needs Assessments on multi-family
housing apartment communities in the US. US Housing Consultants
has also asked me to manage the renovation/repair services that
these apartment communities need to pass their annual REAC inspection.
When I am not working, I enjoy traveling in our mini-motor home
with the family. But most of the time I ride bicycles and have
competed in long distance events such as RAIN (Ride Across Indiana).
My best ride this year was the Hilly Hundred with my daughter’s
Catie & Molly. We rode a tandem with a tag along. I
seldom had to pedal. I also started the Indiana Flute Circle
for those who play and make Native American style flutes. We
meet at the Eitlejorg Museum monthly and entertain upon request.

Whether you are buying an investment property or a home for your
family…old or new… I will help you to know the condition
of the structural and mechanical systems. Is THIS house the RIGHT
house? I can provide you with critical information that you need to
make an educated decision about your purchase.
I spent 4 years in the United States Navy where I fine tuned my mechanical
skills working on H-3 and H-60 helicopters as an Aviation Structural
Mechanic. I was involved with many aspects of the air frame structure
and mechanical components, as well as troubleshooting and flight
line support / operations.
After my Honorable Discharge in 1998, I
embarked on a career in commercial and industrial Fire & Security
systems. Starting out in installation, I would eventually move
up to fill roles in Project Management and Project Development Engineering.
These roles would involve me in various phases of large scale
commercial and industrial construction and remodeling projects for
many leading local businesses. This exposure included me in design
planning that would involve local building, electrical, and fire
codes. On site involvement throughout the construction process allowed
me to become familiar with proper construction procedures, as I would
coordinate with various special trades.
I bought my first fixer upper
in 2001, and began to become intrigued with the numerous systems
and components of a home…how they
work, how they work together, as well as how they can fail and
the implications of those failures. I decided to pursue a career
as a Home Inspector to use my knowledge and experiences to help others
better understand the house that they are planning on purchasing,
as well as the often overlooked responsibilities and required
maintenance of home ownership. |

Any investment involves some level of risk. Buying a home,
whether for your first time or last, could very well be your
largest investment. When assuming all of a home’s systems
and components the risk can be great and the stakes can be high. So
why not use the tools that are available to assess that risk. A
HOME INSPECTION is one of those tools. Having me inspect your
next purchase will help you break down risk and allow you
to make a more rational and wise decision.
I graduated from
the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University in 2005. There,
I obtained Bachelor’s degrees
in Finance, Business Process Management, and Operations Management. After
school I began a career in Logistics for WalMart. I currently
manage over 50 people as well as operate and care for multimillion
dollar equipment. My schedule at WalMart has allowed me to pursue
a 2nd career.
I knew I wanted to begin a career in real estate. I
just didn’t
know where to concentrate. Then I bought my first home in Avon. After
making numerous repairs and upgrades I realized that home
repairs and inspections could be a very rewarding career
option. The skills I have obtained through training and spending time
with Steve Surette and Bryan Gibbs, as well as skills I learned as
a Commercial Roofer have allowed me to thoroughly understand a home
and it’s
components along with the Inspection and Home Repair Industries.
Together,
my fiancé Emily, and I live east of Avon with our
3 dogs: Layla the Boxer, Trey the Rhodesian, and River the
German Shepherd mix. We have plans to get married in Hawaii
this next June. |
